Tom, known as Thomas, was born in June 1884 in Bolton.1  Thomas' father was Thomas Ashcroft and his mother was Mary Davenport.  His paternal grandparents were James Ashcroft and Mary Longworth. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Reuben, Walter, Henry, Gertrude and Beatrice.  He was the youngest of the eight known children.
