Margaret was born in December 1841 in Bolton.1  Margaret's father was John Allen and her mother was Ellen Crank.  Her paternal grandparents were John Allen and Elizabeth (Betty) Partington. She had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Thomas, Richard, Joseph, Lillie, Betty, Alice, Ellen and Ann. She had an adopted sister named Mary.
