Thomas was born in December 1851 at Bolton Emmanuel.1  Thomas' father was John Allen and his mother was Ellen Crank.  His paternal grandparents were John Allen and Elizabeth (Betty) Partington. He had three brothers and six sisters, named John, Richard, Joseph, Lillie, Betty, Margaret, Alice, Ellen and Ann. He had an adopted sister named Mary.
