Ellen was born in June 1849 at Bolton Emmanuel.1  Ellen's father was John Allen and her mother was Ellen Crank.  Her paternal grandparents were John Allen and Elizabeth (Betty) Partington. She had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Thomas, Richard, Joseph, Lillie, Betty, Margaret, Alice and Ann. She had an adopted sister named Mary.
