Joseph's father was John Allen and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Partington.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Allen and Rachel Knowles. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Richard, John, Mary, Rachel, Betty and Ellen.  He was the third oldest of the seven known children.
