Joseph was born in 1806 in Bolton and his baptism took place on February 16th, 1806 at St. Mary (Deane).1  Joseph's father was John Allen and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Partington.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Allen and Rachel Knowles. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Richard, John, Mary, Rachel, Betty and Ellen.  He was the third oldest of the seven known children.
