Ellen's father was John Allen and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Partington.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Allen and Rachel Knowles. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Joseph, John, Mary, Rachel and Betty.  She was the youngest of the seven known children.
