Martha was born on November 16th, 1855.  Martha's father was Jacobus Cornelius Martens and her mother was Margaretha Susanna Cloete.  Her paternal grandfather was Jan  Thomas Martens and her paternal grandmother is Anna Maria Isabella Coetzee. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Jan, Jan, Susanna, Anna, Margaretha, Maria, Jacoba, Geertruida and Dina.  She is the third youngest of the ten children.
