Jacobus was born on February 2nd, 1824.  Jacobus' father was Jan  Thomas Martens and his mother is Anna Maria Isabella Coetzee.  His paternal grandparents are Jacobus Martens and Maria Magdalena Joubert. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named Jan (Tommie), Cornelius (Basheesa), Joshua, Johannis, Hendrik, Johannes, Hendrik, Anna, Maria (Martha), Maria, Elisabeth and Geertruijda.  He died at the age of 68 on April 6th, 1892.
