Anna was born in 1827.  Anna's father was Jan  Thomas Martens and her mother is Anna Maria Isabella Coetzee.  Her paternal grandparents are Jacobus Martens and Maria Magdalena Joubert. She had eight brothers and four sisters, named Jacobus, Jan (Tommie), Cornelius (Basheesa), Joshua, Johannis, Hendrik, Johannes, Hendrik, Maria (Martha), Maria, Elisabeth and Geertruijda.  She died at the age of 34 in 1861.
