Joshua was born on June 21st, 1844.  Joshua's father was Jan  Thomas Martens and his mother is Anna Maria Isabella Coetzee.  His paternal grandparents are Jacobus Martens and Maria Magdalena Joubert. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named Jacobus, Jan (Tommie), Cornelius (Basheesa), Johannis, Hendrik, Johannes, Hendrik, Anna, Maria (Martha), Maria, Elisabeth and Geertruijda.  He died at the age of 52 on March 25th, 1897.
