Jan was born on April 22nd, 1854.  Jan's father was Jacobus Cornelius Martens and his mother was Margaretha Susanna Cloete.  His paternal grandfather was Jan  Thomas Martens and his paternal grandmother is Anna Maria Isabella Coetzee. He had a brother and eight sisters, named Jan, Susanna, Anna, Margaretha, Maria, Jacoba, Geertruida, Martha and Dina.  He is the fourth youngest of the ten children.
