Jacoba was born on September 2nd, 1851.  Jacoba's father was Jacobus Cornelius Martens and her mother was Margaretha Susanna Cloete.  Her paternal grandfather was Jan  Thomas Martens and her paternal grandmother is Anna Maria Isabella Coetzee. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Jan, Jan, Susanna, Anna, Margaretha, Maria, Geertruida, Martha and Dina.  She is the fifth oldest of the ten children.
