John was born on March 8th, 1881.  John's father was Jacobus  Josua Francois Martens and his mother was Susanna Elizabeth Martens.  His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Jacobus Martens and Elizabeth Maria Roos; his maternal grandparents were Jacobus Cornelius Martens and Margaretha Susanna Cloete. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Hendrik, Jacobus, Francois, Wilhelmina, Margaretha, Frederika, Paulina, Maria, Susanna, Christina and Martina.  He is the fourth youngest of the twelve children. He had two half-sisters named Anna and Elisabeth.
