Christina was born on September 18th, 1882.  Christina's father was Jacobus  Josua Francois Martens and her mother was Susanna Elizabeth Martens.  Her paternal grandparents were Hendrik Jacobus Martens and Elizabeth Maria Roos; her maternal grandparents were Jacobus Cornelius Martens and Margaretha Susanna Cloete. She had five brothers and six sisters, named Hendrik, Jacobus, Francois, John, Wilhelmina, Margaretha, Frederika, Paulina, Maria, Susanna and Martina.  She is the third youngest of the twelve children. She had two half-sisters named Anna and Elisabeth.
