Hendrik was born on November 12th, 1868.  Hendrik's father was Jacobus  Josua Francois Martens and his mother was Susanna Elizabeth Martens.  His paternal grandparents were Hendrik Jacobus Martens and Elizabeth Maria Roos; his maternal grandparents were Jacobus Cornelius Martens and Margaretha Susanna Cloete. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Jacobus, Francois, John, Wilhelmina, Margaretha, Frederika, Paulina, Maria, Susanna, Christina and Martina.  He is the second oldest of the twelve children. He had two half-sisters named Anna and Elisabeth.
