Sarah was born in 1851 in Chapel Hill, Glocestershire.1   Sarah's father was Richard Ward and her mother was Ann.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Ward and Sarah. She had two brothers and five sisters, named James, Alfred, Mary, Hannah, Louisia, Ellen and Fanny.  She was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
