Hannah was born in 1846 in Lydbrook. Hannah's father was Richard Ward and her mother was Ann.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Ward and Sarah. She had two brothers and five sisters, named James, Alfred, Mary, Sarah, Louisia, Ellen and Fanny.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.
