James was born in 1845 in Lydbrook.1  James' father was Richard Ward and his mother was Ann.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Ward and Sarah. He had a brother and six sisters, named Alfred, Mary, Hannah, Sarah, Louisia, Ellen and Fanny.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
