Alfred was born in 1849 in Lydbrook.1  Alfred's father was Richard Ward and his mother was Ann.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Ward and Sarah. He had a brother and six sisters, named James, Mary, Hannah, Sarah, Louisia, Ellen and Fanny.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
