Ellen was born in 1856 in Lydbrook.1   Ellen's father was Richard Ward and her mother was Ann.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Ward and Sarah. She had two brothers and five sisters, named James, Alfred, Mary, Hannah, Sarah, Louisia and Fanny.  She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
