Alice Maud was born in 1884 in North Walsham, Swanton, Norfolk, England. Alice Maud's father was Robert Joseph Hewitt and her mother was Charlotte Catherine Girdlestone. Her maternal grandparents were George Girdlestone and Mary Ann Doughty. She had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Robert, Earnest, James, Agnes, Beatrice, Lily, Agnes and Matilda Ellen. She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.-
