Sarah was born in 1853 in North Walsham, Swanton, Norfolk, England. Sarah's father was George Girdlestone and her mother was Mary Ann Doughty. Her paternal grandparents were William James Girdlestone and Martha Humphries. She had five brothers and six sisters, named William, George, Matthew, John, Charles, Elizabeth, Martha, Mary Ann, Charlotte Catherine, Eliza and Rebecca. She was the fifth youngest of the twelve children.-
