John was born in 1662 in Thornage, Norfolk, England.  John's father was Richard Girdlestone (The Elder) and his mother was Palgrave Frith.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Girdlestone and Elizabeth Pyle. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Richard, Thomas, Richard and Mary.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 57 in 1719 in Baconsthorpe, Norfolk, England.
