Richard was born in 1672 in Letheringsett Or, Kelling, Norfolk, England.  Richard's father was Richard Girdlestone (The Elder) and his mother was Palgrave Frith.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Girdlestone and Elizabeth Pyle. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Richard, John, Thomas and Mary.  He was the youngest of the six children.
