Mary was born in 1657 in Thornage, Norfolk, England.  Mary's father was Richard Girdlestone (The Elder) and her mother was Palgrave Frith.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Girdlestone and Elizabeth Pyle. She had five brothers named Thomas, Richard, John, Thomas and Richard.  She was the oldest of the six children.
