Mary Ann was born in 1849 in North Walsham, Swanton, Norfolk, England. Mary Ann's father was George Girdlestone and her mother was Mary Ann Doughty. Her paternal grandparents were William James Girdlestone and Martha Humphries. She had five brothers and six sisters, named William, George, Matthew, John, Charles, Elizabeth, Martha, Sarah, Charlotte Catherine, Eliza and Rebecca. She was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.-
