John was born on November 12th, 1800 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.  John's father was William Aitchison and his mother was Elizabeth Nairne.  His paternal grandparents were John Aitchison and Janet Tweedie; his maternal grandparents were John Nairne and Janet Robertson. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, William, David, Elizabeth, Janet, Margaret and Mary Nairne.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
