Franceas was born in 1766 in Otley, Yorkshire and her baptism took place there on August 3rd, 1766. Franceas' father was William Coates and her mother was Elizabeth Petty. Her paternal grandfather was Richard Coates. She had two brothers and four sisters, named James, John, Ann, Sarah, Betty and Sarah. She was the oldest of the seven children.
