Her paternal grandparents were Macamee Mew and Ann Rutledge Smith. She had four brothers and five sisters, named John Rufus, Henry, James Alexander, Edward C., Martha Elizabeth, Florence Ann, Julia Leocardia, Mary Ellen and Harriet Isabel. She was the fourth youngest of the ten children. She died at the age of 80 on October 3rd, 1933 in Charleston, Charleston Co., SC.
