Her paternal grandparents were Alexander Orr and Margaret Peggy Ramsey; her maternal grandparents were Andrew Messersmith and Elizabeth Sawyer. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Andrew R, Alexander S, William, Hiram, Robert, Samuel, Melinda, Martha Jane, Margaret and Nancy J. She was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.-
