Joseph was born on August 20th, 1824 in KY. Joseph's father was Samuel S. Spencer and his mother was Elizabeth Troxell. His paternal grandfather was Michael C. Spencer and his paternal grandmother is Hannah Mattingly; his maternal grandfather was Frederick Troxell and his maternal grandmother is Anna Hess. He had five brothers and five sisters, named William, John Jr., James, Apollis Hess, Jane, Anna Hess, Darlinda, Letha, Zerilda and Elizabeth.
