Syddenham was born after 1815. Syddenham's father was Caleb William Mills and his mother was Erzilla East. His paternal grandparents were John Mills and Martha Ewing; his maternal grandparents were North East and Kerenhappuch Peyton. He had a brother and five sisters, named William L., Edna Ann, Josephine Doscia, Cleopatra Penelope, Adromacha and Keren Happuch. He is the second oldest of the seven children.
