William S. was born on January 9th, 1829 in Wilkes Co., NC. William S.'s father was John Mikels and his mother was Louisa Bethany Minton. His paternal grandparents were David Hugh Michael and Lucinda Doty. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James Purvis, Abraham Lee, Rebecca Adeline and Mary Jane.
