E-mail from our family historian 3/2005 Rose Haddle stating case for John's lineage to Conrad Michael; however, she is still looking for definitive proof, so this a probable, but still tentative, position for John Mickle/Michael/Mitchell:
"... John Michael who came to America with his father Conrad Michael also father of Christain Michael. reference of Conrad's immigration to PA Conrad Michael arrived in Philadelphia in 1741 , with a family of 6 aboard the ship "St Mark" from Rotterdam , Capt William Wilson , shipmaster. Note; Conrad Michael is found in North Carolina tax lists in 1755, 1759 (note: Conrad may have been an Absentee owner and never actually livedin North Carolina but in Pennsylvania). Family Lore says Conrad deeded his land in North Carolina to Christian and returned to Europe. Note; Early NC Deed records-6:380 Apr 15, 1767 John Howard & w/Mary to John Mitchell (Mickle), merchant for 40L, 103 AC Grants Crk adj. Geo. Bruner, Wts: Solomon (S) Sparks, Michael Miller,6: 384 Apr 15, 1767 John Howard & w/Mary to John Mitchell for 180L 214 AC N/bank Yadkin Riv Wts: Solomon (S) Sparks Michael Miller. (This John Mitchell maybe Conrad Michael's son) Conrad Michael's Deed records John Howard-He was in Rowan County by March 20, 1758, when he purchased 222 acres of land on the west side of the Yadkin from Peter Dilts. In 1760 he bought lots in the village of Salisbury and the next year he wasgranted 550 acres of land on both sides of Grant's Creek. On December 9,1761, he and wife Mary sold a portion of this tract of 550 acres to Daniel Little, John L. Beard and Conrad Michael, all of Rowan County."
E-mail from Rose Haddle 8/4/2005: "The immigation records of PA of which there are 4 referring to ConradMicheal, One shows his full name as Johann Conrad Michell, on the ships list of 'St Mark', another shows Conrad arriving with a family of 6 , I think I've rounded up 3 sons later references coming ."
"Conrad Kern and his brother John...were named as nephews of Conrad Michael. The family researched and found Conrad Michael's will which was written in 1764 shortly before he left North Carolina for his return to Germany. This will appoints Conrad Kern As executor of his will. Alas this will does not name any of his children but there must have been an accompaning letter to Conrad Kern as
to the disposal of his properties. This Kern research has a map showing who was deeded the poperties of Conrad Micheal. Also there are other facts about Conrad Michael , his immigration in ,1741 and 1754, his naturalization record in 1763 in Orange Co., NC ( There is also a Barnart Michael naturalized on the same date this must be a son of Conrad Michael along with Christian Michael. Barnart also appears in the 1755 and 1759 early tax records of Rowan Co., NC as does Conrad Micheal I also recieved an email from a Russell Hutchins saying that his Grandfather was Hibbard Hutchin, whose mother was Amy Hutchins who married William Howard Michaels. This info was really a surprise, Hibbert Chalkey Hutchins was a illegitimate child of Amy's before her marriage. I checked it out in Indiana Census records and did find him in Hamilton County,IN in 1870. Conrad Kern was the son of Adam Kern & his wife Marie Barbara Micheal, sister to Conrad Michael."
"I don't know why Conrad would give his other properties to the Kern's rather than his sons. Possibly he had some financial obligations to Adam Kern and his sister. And possibly he had all ready given land to his sons and these were not included in Conrad's unfinished business in North Carolina."

Note: The family legend is that the Michael/Michel line descends from the French, having migrated down the Rhine and intermarrying with English, Irish, and German. This holds with family information that tells us that the MICHEL line was indeed of the French line.
