According to Carlo d'Este's 2002 biography on Eisenhower, the name means "Iron hewer" or "Iron cutter". He states that "according to family lore, some of the earliest Eisenhauers may have been medieval warriors, dating possibly to the time of Charlemagne...* "(O)ver time, the Eisenhauers evolved from warriors into pacifists", many of which were followers of the Menno Simons, founder of the Mennonite movement who "in 1528 (preached) that no authority, either religious or political, existed other than the Bible and personal conscience." Hans emigrated to America in 1741, aboard the ship "Europa", with son Johann Peter.
Nine children were born in Karlsbrunn, Germany (some say France) between 1725 and 1739; four children died in Karlsbrunn, Germany." (From Source 29)
(* Given that Mamie Geneva Dowd, wife of (President) Dwight Eisenhower, descended from various lines to Charlemagne, according to research results available to me so far, the Eisenhauers may indeed have descended from Normandy as well.)
