Edward was born about 1827 in Morgan Co., IL. Edward's father was Hugh Mikels and his mother was Charity Ann Scholl. His paternal grandparents were John Michael and Sarah Whitaker; his maternal grandparents were Peter Morgan Scholl and Mary Bryan Boone. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named William L., John Noah, George M., Samuel, David J., Joseph P., Charles W., James, Polly, Ellen J. and Emily.
