Hugh D. was born on December 7th, 1847 in Schulyer Co., MO. Hugh D.'s father was Edward Mikels and his mother was Lucy Minton. His paternal grandparents were Hugh Mikels and Charity Ann Scholl; his maternal grandparents were Shadrach Minton and Sarah Mikels. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Lewis, Alfred, Sarah F., Martha J. and Lucy Adeline. He was the oldest of the six children.
