His paternal grandparents were John Michael and Sarah Whitaker; his maternal grandparents were Peter Morgan Scholl and Mary Bryan Boone. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named Edward, William L., John Noah, George M., Samuel, David J., Charles W., James, Polly, Ellen J. and Emily.
