Philip was born in 1795 in Lexington, Fayette, KY. Philip's father was Philip Eastin and his mother was Sarah Ann Hite Smith. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Eastin and Sarah Whitlock; his maternal grandparents are Charles Smith and Rebecca Hite. He had five brothers and six sisters, named George, Charles Smith, David, Martin, William, Rebecca, Frances, Mahalia, Louisiana, Sarah and Rachel. He was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.
