John was born about 1135 in Montreuil, Flandres, France.  John's father was Count Guy II of Ponthieu and his mother is Ida de Saint Pol.  His paternal grandparents were Duke Guillaume d'Alencon III and Countess Alice Helie of Burgundy; his maternal grandfather was Count Hugh III of St. Pol and his maternal grandmother is Beatrix.  He was an only child.  He died in 1191 in Acre, Palestine.


John's first family with Mathilde du Maine

‌John and Mathilde were married in a religious ceremony in 1161 in Normandy, France.  They had a daughter named Adaele.


John's second family with Baeatrice Candavaine de Saint Pol

‌John and Baeatrice Candavaine were married in a religious ceremony in 1174 in France.  They had a son named William.
