me. Parents of Agnes' husband havenot been proven as yet.
In his will he left to wife Nancy her bed and furniture an
d all bed clothes, "the best horse or mare that I have tha
t she will choose". One equal part with my children of my p
ersonal estate. Mulatto girlEmy for her lifetime, then t
o James, John, George and Henry and my two youngest daughte
rs Ann and Peggy. "To live in the mansion house, unmoleste
d andto have a decent and sufficient maintenance of my pla
ntation during her widowhood". To Samuel, Adam, James, Joh
n, George and Henry jointly the land "I now possess and adj
oining this my mansion plantation". To Samuel and Adam, equ
ally with the other younger brothers, Emy. To son Willia
m land bought fromDavid and Isack [sic] Gregory on Back Cr
eek. To six younger sons (above) andfour youngest daughter
s, Mary, Isabel, Ann and Peggy, equal shares of personal es
tate. To two eldest sons Robert and William, and two daught
ers, Sally and Ginny six pounds each. "Five Negro men slave
s, Jack and Will and wench named Sall" to be kept on the pl
antation for wife and children "any of them should prove un
ruly and in that case to be sold". Moveable estate - horses
, cattle, sheep and household furniture - to be appraised a
nd sold. Farming implements to be kept for plantation. Codi
cil: 09 Sep 1793. Wife Nancy substituted for Berry as a
n executor. Provision made for land left to six youngest s
ons to go to them at age 21. Provision for the possible de
ath of any of these before age 21, and for sale of their sh
ares if they wish to sell.
Inventory of the estate, valued at £200, was filed on 27 De
c 1793 by Samuel Vance, John Dean and John Wilson, The inv
entory included livestock (horses & colts, cattle, hogs, ge
ese, and sheep), a gun, horse tack, a number of books (incl
uding a large home Bible and 2 other Bibles), household fur
niture, spinning and weaving equipment, and clothing. Slav
es listed in inventory were 2 men (Will and Jack) and a wom
an (Sall). Other slaves mentioned in will were not named.
Probated at December Court, 1793. Executors: son, Robert
, and son-in-law, John Berry. Wit: John Wilson, John Berr
y and Robert Given.
