Her paternal grandfather was Major John Given and her paternal grandmother is Mary Margaret Sitlington; her maternal grandparents were Robert Bratton and Ann McFarland. She had eight brothers and six sisters, named Robert, William, Samuel, Adam, James, John, George, Henry, Sarah "Sally" Hannah, Janet "Ginny", Mary, Isabella, Anne and Margaret "Peggy".
