Purchased 300 acres of land from John Breckenridge, what is now the town of Logan, WV in 1799. No children by his wife Nancy McNeely, but reportedly one child by Katie McComas. Child went by the name of Peter Dingess. Moved to the site that is presently covered by the Logan Courthouse in 1799, and built a home. John Dempsey also came with him and built a cabin on the Little Island, but afterwards moved to Island Creek. This is the first permanent settlement of which there is a record.

The first Circuit Court was held at his residence within the present limits of the city of Logan, was on the 7th day of May, 1824 Hon. Lewis Summers presided as judge. The first County Court was held at the same place, but at an earlier date. The first election for the county was held at the home of William Dingess in 1824, and James Bias and Benjamin Smith were elected to the General Assembly.
William and wife, Nancy, lived in a house consisting of four large rooms situated on Stratton Street and directly opposite the present courthouse. The home was used for judicial purposes until a short time previous to the Civil War, when a large log Courthouse was erected on the present courthouse site.
William is listed in the 1815 Cabell Co. Tax List (present day Logan Co.). He is listed as having 1 free white male over 16, 3 slaves, 6 horses,16 cattle. 3 July 1815, Cabell Co VA. Indenture.
