Margaret was born about 1791 in Montgomery Co, Virginia.1   Margaret's father was JOHANNES Peter Dingess and her mother was MARY Smith.  Her paternal grandparents are MICHAEL DINGESS and GERTRUDE; her maternal grandparents are Thomas Smith and Barbara Dunbar Anderson. She had four brothers and six sisters, named William, Charles Anderson, Peter, John, Elizabeth, Susannah, MARY, Ann, Sarah and Harriett.  She is the second youngest of the eleven children.
