His paternal grandparents were Sheppard Thaxton and Martha J. McCormick. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Elmer, Franklin S., Ross, Albert O. "Bertie", Effie M., Alice, Marietta, Adeline and Nancy M.. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.-
