Elizabeth Le Despenser 
Elizabeth was born in 1311.1 Elizabeth's father was Hugh Le Despenser and her mother was Eleanore de CLARE. Her paternal grandparents were Hugh Le Despenser and Isabella De Beauchamp; her maternal grandparents were Gilbert 'The Red Earl' De Clare and Joan "of Acre" Plantagenet. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Philip Le, Edward, Gilbert, Hugh Le, Margaret, Joan, Elizabeth and Isabel Le. She died at the age of 78 on July 13th, 1389.1 General Notes

Maurice married in August 1338 (when aged about 8), Elizabeth, daughterof Hugh Despenser, the younger by Eleanor, daughter and coheir of Gilbertde Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Hertford, ''but though thus married at8, yet he had no issue by her till about 12 or 13 years after.'' He diedat Berkeley Castle, ''never thoroughly cured of the wounds he received atPoitiers,'' 8 June 1368, aged 37 and upwards, and was buried with hismother at St. Augustine's, Bristol. Elizabeth Despenser, Lady Berkeley, was probably the youngest of HughDespenser the younger and Eleanor de Clare's children. After her father'sdownfall and execution, she escaped the fate of 3 of her elder sisters -being sent to a nunnery for life - due to her extreme youth. In August1338, young Elizabeth Despenser was delivered by the prioress of Wix tothe care of her aunt Elizabeth de Burgh, Lady of Clare. The young girlwas part of her aunt's household for about a year and a half, when shewas sent to Tewkesbury to live with the Berkeleys. Elizabeth Despensermaintained a close relationship with her aunt up until the latter's deathin 1360. Elizabeth Despenser and Maurice, Lord Berkeley, had seven children thatsurvived infancy. But apparently only two (sons) had issue themselves.
