DESPENSER, HUGH (c. 1287 - 1326), courtier. Known as 'the younger' todistinguish him from his father, like whom he was a leading figure atEdward II's court, he was clearly the King's favourite by 1321. Hisacquisitiveness, especially in the Welsh Marches, led to the formation ofan anti-Despenser coalition; after this was defeated at Boroughbridge(Yorks.) in 1322, his greed and arrogance reached new heights. Healienated public opinion to such an extent that, when Roger Mortimer andIsabella of France invaded in 1326, no one raised a finger to help him,and he and his father were executed by the new regime.
