Her paternal grandparents are William Carney and Margaret Bonnett; her maternal grandparents were John Fisher and Lucretia Harrison. She had five brothers and seven sisters, named Elbin C., Charles, Eldridge, John McClellan, William Franklin "Billy", Mary Catherine, America, Margaret Elizabeth, Lucretia, Nora Alice, Celia Jane and Martha Bell. She is the youngest of the thirteen children.-
