His paternal grandparents were William Hastings and Margaret Bigod; his maternal grandparents were David Canmore I Earl of Huntingdon and Mabel De Meschines. He had a brother and four sisters, named John, Ada, Margery Maud, Hillary Hillaria Eleanore and Eleanor. He was the third oldest of the six children.
