James Stephen was born on December 19th, 1816 in Camden, Kershaw Co., S.C..1 James Stephen's father was Bryant A. Spradley and his mother was Frances Payne. His paternal grandparents were James, Sr. Spradley and Mary Manning; his maternal grandparents were John Payne and Sarah Shiver. He had six brothers and four sisters, named John William, Samuel, Manning C., Bryant Eugene, William, Thomas Harrison, Martha A., Dorcas, Mary Elizabeth and Mahaza Ellen. He was the oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 77 on September 2nd, 1894 in Patsburg, Crenshaw Co., AL.
